Federal agents have arrested 14 individuals on charges of trafficking military-style weapons into Mexico, with at least nine of those suspects identified as illegal immigrants in the United States. These arrests were part of an investigation revealing that drug trafficking organizations are using profits from meth and fentanyl sales to acquire powerful firearms, including a 50-caliber machine gun and others capable of being modified for full automatic fire.

During a recent news conference, authorities displayed over a quarter of a million dollars’ worth of firearms seized in Georgia, emphasizing the significant role that weapon trafficking plays in exacerbating violence in Mexico. Officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) shed light on how these weapons, while not fully automatic at the time of their legal purchase, can be altered by cartels to increase their lethality. As the investigation continues, names of the arrested individuals have not yet been disclosed.
