Gun-industry companies have pledged $2 million toward the construction of a state-owned shooting range in South Dakota, which is expected to be one of the largest public facilities of its kind in the country. The Pete Lien & Sons Shooting Sports Complex, covering 400 acres north of Rapid City, will feature various shooting facilities and programs but has faced political pushback due to controversies surrounding its funding and the role of gun lobbyists.

About $6 million of the complex’s construction has been raised through donations, marking a significant investment amid discontent among state legislators over funding and oversight. Notable contributors include well-known gun manufacturers like Smith & Wesson and Glock, both donating $750,000 each. The debate continues as some lawmakers express unease regarding the implications of gun industry involvement in state affairs, echoing concerns over potential impacts on firearm regulations.
