An exchange of gunfire in Columbia, S.C., led one man to face criminal charges while the other person acted in what local deputies described as “self-defense.”
Police say the shooting, which occurred past 11 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, resulted after the two men, who were considered to be “associates,” held a brief conversation at the side of the road. The 40-year-old suspect drew and fired at the victim, hitting him. The victim, in turn, drew a gun and returned fire, wounding the suspect.
Police questioned and then detained the 40-year-old man, who was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He currently faces charges of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and a felon in possession of a weapon. (WIS 10 News; Richland County, S.C.; 11/3/24)

Edward Visnaw of Portland, Ore., a bakery owner, was tallying the day’s receipts when he heard a knock on the door. He was confronted by a man who flashed what seemed to be a badge. The man said he was a detective and had a tip that the bakery was to be robbed. The man said he would return to the police car and radio for another car. Visnaw became suspicious because of the man’s youth and slipped a revolver into his pocket. When the “detective” returned, he told Visnaw to lock the door. As Visnaw did so, the man hit him several times over the head with a blackjack. Warding off the blows, the baker pulled his revolver and shot his assailant dead. (Oregon Journal)
