Springfield Armory entered the double-stack, M1911-style handgun market with its 1911 DS Prodigy in 2022, which was a full-size, steel-frame handgun chambered in 9 mm Luger. Now, for 2025, the company is offering a lightweight, compact version of the Prodigy designed for carry use.
The Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5” Compact has a redesigned frame that is machined from billet aluminum and shortened to accept flush-fit, 15-round magazines as opposed to the 17-round flush-fit magazines used on the full-size gun. The slide and barrel have also subsequently been shortened, with the barrel measuring 3.5”. Both the slide and barrel are built from forged steel, and the stainless-steel barrel is treated with a black DLC coating and is a bull profile that fits into the slide mouth without any traditional bushing.
Overall, the Springfield Prodigy Compact measures in at 7” long, 5.1” high and weighs 25.5 ozs., unloaded. As part of the frame redesign, Springfield Armory shortened the beavertail grip safety and also re-contoured the skeletonized hammer to minimize their profiles, adding to the gun’s sleek, carry-ready profile. Control-wise, the Prodigy Compact uses a bilateral manual thumb safety, as well as a slide-stop lever in its traditional location, along with a push-button magazine release on the grip frame’s left side.
As with its full-size sibling, the Springfield Prodigy Compact makes use of the company’s Agency Optic System that allows for wide compatibility with many popular red-dot optic footprints. An optic-height set of open sights allows users to co-witness with a mounted dot sight. Each pistol ships with two 15-round magazines, and the suggested retail price is $1,549.
