Since July 2024, Des Moines police have been involved in six fatal shootings, with the number of deaths significantly increasing in just over half a year compared to the five fatalities recorded from 2015 to 2022. As investigations into the three shootings that occurred in early 2025 are ongoing, the Polk County and Iowa Attorney General’s offices have cleared officers in the three incidents from 2024, raising questions about police accountability and community safety.

Among the incidents, a confrontation on February 6 resulted in the death of David Kintz Jr., who allegedly drew a firearm during a police stop amid a drug investigation. This shooting follows a series of high-stakes encounters, including the January death of Brandon Mitchell, who reportedly claimed to be armed before being shot by officers, even though no weapon was found at the scene. The escalating violence involving law enforcement in Des Moines highlights a troubling trend that locals are keen to understand as all cases remain under scrutiny.
