The Columbus Police Department (CPD) recently hosted its annual ‘Women’s Self-Defense and Firearms Safety Course,’ addressing the alarming statistic that women are five times more likely to be victims of crime. Chief of Police Stoney Mathis emphasized the program’s goal of empowering women with personal safety strategies and practical self-defense techniques, including hands-on demonstrations with the Body Opponent Bag.

Participants, including Aaliyah Ash, shared personal stories of overcoming past traumas and the importance of gaining self-defense knowledge. On the second day, attendees learned safe firearm handling, which was a first experience for many, including mothers Twanna and Hannah, who highlighted the importance of developing survival skills. At the conclusion of the course, all participants received certificates, marking a significant step toward enhancing their personal safety.
