The Connecticut House of Representatives passes House Bill 7042 by a decisive 100-46 vote, facilitating lawsuits against the gun industry for negligence and misconduct. This bill mandates that firearm industry members implement reasonable controls to prevent the illegal distribution of firearms, aiming to hold them accountable for sales practices that jeopardize public safety.

Key provisions in the legislation allow individuals, municipalities, or the state to initiate legal action against firearm companies that violate laws or engage in harmful marketing. State Rep. Steve Stafstrom emphasizes that this is vital due to the limitations of the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which restricts lawsuits against gun manufacturers. Critics, however, express concerns about singling out the gun industry, underlining debates surrounding gun ownership rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.
