The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) recently removed a memorial dedicated to victims of gun violence from its headquarters, dismantling around 120 portraits that were displayed since the Biden administration. Justice Department spokesperson Chad Gilmartin claims the move is not politically motivated, stating the agency is exploring alternative ways to honor victims while ensuring the rights of law-abiding Americans are preserved.

The memorial, initiated by former ATF director Steven Dettelbach, featured portraits of individuals, including law enforcement officers and children from mass shootings. Advocates express deep disappointment with the removal, highlighting how the tribute served as a crucial reminder of the agency’s mission amid ongoing national debates about gun control. The decision comes as the ATF faces budget cuts proposed by the Trump administration, raising questions about the agency’s future and its stance on gun regulations.
