Man Convicted in Kalamazoo Attempted Robbery Homicide

Liborio Rogelio Valdez II, 29, is convicted of manslaughter and multiple firearm-related charges in connection with the 2023 shooting death of Kavonta Martin, 24. The incident occurred during an attempted robbery on April 4, 2023, when Valdez shot Martin inside Martin’s vehicle, subsequently fleeing the scene before the police arrived.

Witnesses reported gunfire in the area, leading police to discover Martin unresponsive in a parking lot, despite lifesaving efforts. Valdez, already on parole for previous offenses including armed robbery, is scheduled for sentencing on June 10, 2025, after a trial that featured extensive testimony and evidence presentation.
