The U.S. Justice Department has reached a nearly $5 million settlement with the family of Ashli Babbitt, who was fatally shot by Capitol police during the January 6 insurrection. This agreement settles a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Babbitt’s estate, confirming that the Capitol Police officer involved was cleared of wrongdoing, acting in self-defense as rioters attempted to breach the House chamber.

Babbitt, a military veteran and supporter of Donald Trump, was shot while climbing through a window in an effort to join a mob that breached security. Her family contends that she posed no threat to the officer, raising questions about the use of deadly force in high-pressure situations involving unarmed individuals. This case adds to the complex narrative surrounding the January 6 events, where over 1,500 individuals faced charges in connection to the riot.
