Cincinnati has deployed ShotSpotter, an Acoustic Gunshot Detection System, to combat the alarming gun violence that disproportionately affects its Black communities. The system uses a network of sensors to detect gunfire in real time, sending alerts to police within 60 seconds, which can prove crucial for victims who might otherwise go unnoticed. Research indicates that neighborhoods utilizing ShotSpotter have seen a significant drop in violent crime, with one study reporting a 46% decrease.

Since its implementation in 2017, ShotSpotter has generated over 3,400 alerts of gunfire. Given that about 80% of gun violence incidents go unreported, this technology offers a critical lifeline for rapid response and community safety. Evaluations show that 95% of residents in covered areas find ShotSpotter effective, with nearly 90% advocating for its expansion. As cities redefine public safety measures, ShotSpotter’s innovative approach highlights the urgent need for technologies addressing the chronic underreporting of gun violence.
