Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announces a dramatic rise in youth violence in New York City, attributing it to the state’s “Raise the Age” law that increased the age for adult criminal charges to 18. She reports a 136% rise in arrests of individuals under 18 with guns between 2018 and 2024, along with a 192% increase in underage shooters and an 81% spike in juvenile victims of gun violence, highlighting a troubling trend in the city.

Tisch’s remarks follow recent high-profile incidents involving minors in gun violence, including a 13-year-old charged with murder. As authorities grapple with these alarming statistics, Tisch warns of the consequences of a legal environment viewed as consequence-free by youth increasingly involved in gang-related activities. Amidst the rising youth violence, officials also note a historic decrease in overall shootings and murders in the city this year.
