The U.S. Supreme Court rules against Mexico’s lawsuit aimed at holding American gun manufacturers accountable for the proliferation of gun violence, particularly in Mexico, where U.S. firearms are commonly linked to drug cartels. This decision reinforces the significant protections from civil liability that Congress has granted the firearm industry, a ruling that critics argue undermines national security and public safety.

Nick Wilson, senior director for Gun Violence Prevention at the Center for American Progress, emphasizes the broader implications, highlighting that gun violence impacts both Mexico and the United States, with firearms now the leading cause of death among American children and teens. The ruling raises concerns about the ongoing challenges of illegal gun trafficking and presents a call to action for Congress to consider repealing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, aimed at creating avenues for justice for survivors of gun violence both domestically and internationally.
