The history of the firearms industry shows that nearly every mechanical engineering achievement with expired patents, such as the 1911, Hi-Power, Glock 17, Inertia Drive Benellis, Smith & Wesson J-frames and so on, have been copied at some point, and Heckler & Koch’s MP5K is no different in that regard. Debuted in the mid-1960s by German manufacturer Heckler & Koch, the MP5 submachine gun has been a mainstay amongst tactical arsenals around the globe, and it is no wonder companies such as Military Armament Corporation are cloning that successful design today. The MAC-5K is proof of Military Armament’s capacity for executing a faithful copy of the ever-popular MP5K, sans select-fire operation. Like the German gun, the MAC-5K emulates the shorter version, with “K” in its name representing “kurz,” which means “short” in German. It is chambered for 9 mm Luger cartridges and features HK’s proven roller-delay mechanism with semi-automatic operation and more. In fact, it is such a great clone that parts compatibility with HK’s version are seamless, and there’s rich aftermarket support in the way of parts and accessories.
Like the MP5, the MAC-5K is supplied with a stamped-steel upper receiver covered with a black lacquer finish. The lower is made of polymer, which is where you’ll begin to notice subtle differences between this clone and the original gun. The fore-end is, too, made of polymer and features a built-in handstop. The altered grip shape of the MAC-5K provides a more ergonomically friendly feel, with built-in finger grooves and thumb shelf.
Operating the MAC-5K is quite simple, however an arm brace or sling will help with efficiency on target. There’s a fine set of sights up top to get you on target right out of the box and two 30-round magazines are included to make that first range visit more enjoyable. Controls are straightforward, slap the forward-mounted charging handle and flick the left-side safety lever to fire and enjoy shooting. A phosphate-finished 5.8” barrel is included, too, and comes with a machined-in tri-lug suppressor mount, which is also used in conjunction with the provided flash hider. A fluted chamber is also utilized to ensure reliable operation.
On the range our testers particularly enjoyed the MAC-5K. Its short overall length lends well to close-quarter work, and its manual of arms that mirrors that of the classic MP5 we’ve come to expect is a boon to its effectiveness. Should an optic be desired, however, we like that the MAC-5K is compatible with HK’s claw mount, too. Add the fact the MAC-5K comes in a hard case with plenty of accessories, and at just under four-and-a-half pounds and 14 inches long, the MAC-5K is a true standout defender with a palatable price-point—what’s not to love?
