The gun industry is poised to generate an estimated $19.6 billion in revenue in 2025, a figure that includes military expenditures. While experts suggest that the civilian sector alone brought in about $9 billion in 2021, various challenges make it difficult to assess the true financial landscape of the industry. Many gunmakers and dealers are privately held, which leaves their financials largely unreported, creating a significant information gap that is unique to this sector.

Despite the lack of transparency, indicators such as production numbers and public company earnings hint at the industry’s economic impact. For instance, nearly 15 million firearms were produced for the U.S. market in 2023, providing a proxy for sales volume. This opaqueness is compounded by companies’ unwillingness to disclose profits gladly, often encapsulated in the competitive nature of the market. To unravel these complexities and understand the true dynamics of gun industry profits, further examination is essential.
