Nancy Maxwell, the executive director of Carbondale United, emphasizes the organization’s mission to address the increasing gun violence in the city, which she perceives as a troubling trend reminiscent of her past life in Chicago. Founded over five years ago, the nonprofit seeks to combat the root causes of violence by engaging the community and raising awareness through initiatives like the national “Wear Orange” campaign, inspired by the tragic shooting of a teen in Chicago in 2013.

This growing movement reflects a nationwide effort to curb gun violence, with Maxwell expressing a personal commitment rooted in her experience as a parent. “To see it starting to pick up, I felt like this is an opportunity for us to interrupt and try to get the violence down,” she says, highlighting the urgency and significance of community involvement in achieving lasting change.
