Colorado Joins Legal Battle Over Rapid-Fire Triggers

Colorado has joined a coalition of 16 states in a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration’s decision to permit the sale of forced-reset triggers, devices that significantly increase the firing rate of semiautomatic rifles. The lawsuit, filed in Maryland, asserts that allowing the sale of these triggers violates federal law and jeopardizes public safety, with Colorado’s Attorney General highlighting a staggering 1,400% increase in incidents involving such devices from 2019 to 2021.

The legal action follows a settlement agreement that enables the return of previously confiscated devices to their owners, a move that many argue contradicts established laws regarding machine guns. The joined states, led by Democratic attorneys general, are actively pushing back against this decision, asserting a commitment to enhancing community safety in the face of rising gun violence and mass shootings linked to rapid-fire technology.
