An alleged carjacker is dead after attempting to steal a vehicle from an armed driver in Hardeeville, S.C., during a spree, according to officers.

Police say the 34-year-old armed suspect attempted to steal a vehicle from a DoorDash delivery driver at about 9:40 p.m. before fleeing in the direction of several hotels. On his way, the suspect fired several shots outside the Econo Lodge Inn & Suites before arriving in the parking lot of the Friendship Inn. There, the man pointed his gun at the driver of a vehicle in the lot and fired at least once. In response, the armed driver drew his own handgun and fired several shots, striking the carjacker at least three times.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by arriving officers. Police also noted that the suspect had been removed from a local business earlier that day for trespassing and had also been known to police during several previous drug-related investigations. “Initial evidence and investigative information caused Detectives to suspect the deceased subject in this case was actively involved in attempted armed assaults on potential victims when he encountered an armed citizen who protected himself,” the Hardeeville Police Department noted in a Facebook post. He hid, waited until two men got inside, and turned on the lights. At the point of a .38-cal. revolver, McDaniel ordered them to be seated while he called the police. (Winston-Salem Journal)
