U.S. Rep. Steve Womack has reintroduced legislation proposing a constitutional amendment to allow Congress to prohibit the burning or desecration of the American flag. This move comes as Womack highlights the Supreme Court’s rulings over the past thirty years that have deemed such actions as constitutionally protected free speech, underscoring the urgency for a new amendment that would empower lawmakers to protect the symbol of national sacrifice.

With backing from Sen. Steve Daines and support from the American Legion, Womack’s bill aims to enshrine protections for the flag in the Constitution, especially in light of recent calls for stricter penalties for flag burning from multiple lawmakers, including former President Trump. As Flag Day approaches, Womack reflects on his military service and past protests that have flouted the flag’s significance, stating that the amendment is necessary to affirm respect for a symbol that represents American values and sacrifices.
