Congresswoman Claudia Tenney has reintroduced a bill intended to protect gun owners from losing their firearms during bankruptcy proceedings, emphasizing the constitutional right to self-defense. Her legislation, known as the Protecting Gun Owners in Bankruptcy Act, aims to classify up to $3,000 worth of firearms as essential property, similar to other personal items like musical instruments and jewelry that are currently exempt from bankruptcy. Tenney asserts that no American should have to surrender their right to self-defense due to financial hardship.

Supported by representatives from Georgia, Utah, and Texas, Tenney’s bill seeks to address what she perceives as a significant gap in federal law regarding asset protection for gun owners. The measure aligns with Tenney’s broader stance on gun rights and aims to guarantee that individuals facing financial distress can still retain their firearms, reflecting a commitment to constitutional rights amidst economic challenges.
