In a significant move to combat gun violence, Michigan announces the allocation of over $6.6 million in grants aimed at supporting local prevention programs during Gun Violence Prevention Month this June. Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasizes the crucial role these initiatives play in enhancing community safety, particularly highlighting the multifaceted Healing. Love. Engagement. Presence (H.E.L.P.) program by the City of Saginaw Police Department, designed to engage at-risk youth through mentorship and intervention.

Since January 2024, 19 programs across the state have benefitted from this funding, with notable efforts including an African American Male Achievement Conference that has already inspired over 800 young participants. As the Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (SCIP) continues to accept grant applications until July 15, local agencies such as the City of Inkster and Berrien County are actively addressing the community impact of gun violence through educational initiatives and crisis response teams. These comprehensive efforts showcase Michigan’s commitment to creating safer environments for all residents.
