An Apache Junction police officer, Gabriel Facio, is in critical condition following a shooting incident involving a “ghost gun,” a type of untraceable firearm assembled from kits and parts. The assailant, identified as 37-year-old Roger Nunez, used this weapon in the attack, highlighting the troubling rise in ghost gun-related violence, which has surged by nearly 1,600% from 2017 to 2023 according to federal agencies.

Ghost guns, lacking serial numbers and subject to minimal regulations, have become increasingly common in criminal activities, with thousands linked to homicide and violent crimes. The ease of access to these firearms, compounded by the absence of background checks, presents significant public safety concerns, particularly for law enforcement officers. As the investigation unfolds, community members are asked to support Officer Facio and his family during this challenging time.
