A new report from the Council on Criminal Justice reveals that parked cars are increasingly becoming a leading source of stolen firearms, accounting for 40% of all reported gun thefts by 2022. This shift in theft patterns indicates a drastic 31% rise over the past five years, particularly in urban areas, where vehicle break-ins have nearly doubled. Cities like Memphis and Detroit top the list for gun theft rates, emphasizing a concerning trend of stolen guns fueling local crime rates.

The report highlights the pressing need for improved firearm security, as firearms stolen from vehicles often circulate within the criminal underworld. With only 16 states mandating the reporting of lost or stolen firearms, experts argue for stronger legislation and public education on safe storage practices. “Where you store your gun really matters,” said Susan Parker, a report author, pointing to vehicle thefts as a significant yet often overlooked source of illegally circulating weapons.
