The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) has suspended the use of the Sig Sauer P320 handgun among its officers, both on and off duty, following a recent incident that resulted in the tragic death of a 21-year-old airman in Wyoming. This suspension comes in light of safety concerns regarding the firearm, which has been linked to multiple lawsuits alleging that it can discharge without the trigger being pulled. In a statement, SAPD emphasized its commitment to officer and community safety as the department takes precautions amid this growing scrutiny.

On July 20, Air Force officials had already paused use of the P320 at Warren Air Force Base after the incident involving Airman Brayden Lovan, prompting further examination by law enforcement agencies, including police in Tampa and the Washington State Criminal Justice Commission, which has banned police recruits from using the weapon. Sig Sauer asserts that the P320 is a safe product and blames perceived defects on user error, maintaining confidence in the ongoing investigations. Given the widespread use of this handgun, both in police departments and by civilians, the outcomes of these safety evaluations are likely to have significant implications.
