Recent mass shootings have reignited the debate over the role of mental health in gun violence, but experts assert that the issue is far more complex. For instance, a suspect in a mass shooting in Austin, Texas, had a history of criminal offenses and serious mental health issues but faced multiple social and environmental factors that may have contributed to the attack.

Experts emphasize that while many mass shooters exhibit mental health problems, these are not sufficient to explain their violent actions. Factors such as a history of violence, access to firearms, and domestic violence play a critical role, with studies indicating that only 3% to 4% of violent acts are solely attributable to serious mental illness. Advocates suggest that potential solutions should focus on limiting access to firearms rather than relying on the mental health system, which is often ill-equipped to prevent such rare but devastating events.
