Brooklyn leaders express outrage following several violent incidents that marred the West Indian Day Parade, where gunfire left seven injured. The police report indicates that these shootings, occurring near the parade’s end along Eastern Parkway, included a shooting that critically impacted two individuals, a 53-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, leading to an arrest linked to the violence.

Public Advocate Jumaane Williams calls for stricter gun control measures to prevent future occurrences of such violence, which he describes as a “plague.” While the NYPD emphasizes a historic drop in gun violence this year, community leaders and residents mourn the violent ending to an event meant to celebrate Caribbean culture and community spirit. “It breaks my heart,” says Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, reflecting the disappointment felt across the borough.
