Ruger’s purchase of the Marlin brand has led to the reintroduction of the classic lever-action rifles produced by that company. Based on that success, that rebirth now includes another aspect of Marlin’s history, rifles that combine quality and affordability under the Glenfield brand name, with the new-for-2025 Glenfield Model A.

The Glenfield Model A builds on the design of the Gen 1 Ruger American, while offering the no-frills value associated with Marlin’s original line of Glenfield firearms.

For decades, Marlin used the “Glenfield” name to market no-frills versions of its iconic firearms, from the Model 60 to the 336, for sale at chain retailers.

The Glenfield brand name was included with Ruger’s 2020 purchase of Marlin Firearms. Advances in metallurgy, computer-controlled machining and polymer technology means that modern “budget” firearms don’t have to sacrifice quality or accuracy to come in at a low price tag. Glenfield rifles are based on Ruger’s highly successful (two million produced to date) first-generation American bolt-actions, recently supplanted by the company’s Gen 2 Americans. They have a three-lug bolt that unlocks with a 70-degree throw, a sliding tang safety and the familiar “bladed” trigger that is user-adjustable between 3-5 lbs. of pull. Model As use a detachable box magazine, either Ruger American pattern or AR-pattern, depending on the chambering.

The Glenfield Model A uses a three-lug bolt with a 70 degree throw and comes with a factory-installed Picatinny optics rail.

Ruger is still offering select models of Gen 1 Americans, but a similar Glenfield will come in about $100 less in MSRP. This is accomplished by offering the rifles with “no frills, just the essentials,” much like its namesake car produced by Ford in the late 1920s. All Model As come with a factory-installed Picatinny rail for ease of mounting optics.

As an upgrade from Gen 1 Americans, the Model A’s polymer stock has a Moss Green splatter finish that gives both a camouflaged finish and texturing. Stocks use a patented “Power Bedding” integral bedding block system. Metal parts have a matte black finish. All models use a 20” cold hammer-forged barrel with its muzzle threaded. The Model A is available chambered in .243 Win., 6.5 mm Creedmoor, .270 Win., .308 Win., .30-’06 Sprg., 350 Legend, and 400 Legend.

Glenfield rifles have an MSRP of $499. For more information, see the company’s website.
