The AR-15/M16 vs. AK-47 debate is often framed in a Cold War West vs. East. The reality is that AR-15-type firearms are now made around the world, while plenty of AKs are made in the U.S. An example of the latter is the Stenzel American Kalashnikov – 2021 or SAK-21. More than an American-made AK, Stenzel Industries calls the SAK-21 “a modular, purpose-built firearm, developed to meet the demands of special operations forces and professional shooters.”
While maintaining some basic design features and aesthetics of the Kalashnikov, the SAK-21 makes significant departures. Its receiver is machined out of billet aluminum with a steel trunnion insert, and it has a user-changeable barrel. This design allows for cartridge conversion by swapping out the barrel, bolt and magazine. While currently offered in 7.62×39 mm, there are plans to add 5.56 NATO and other chambering options in the future. Its two-lug rotating bolt that operates in a carrier mimics the AK, but Stenzel has opted to go with a short-stroke gas piston operating system for softer felt recoil and better accuracy. The system is adjustable and tunable for optimized use with suppressors.
While the top cover has a rear mounted takedown button that allows it to be opened for disassembly, it is made of billet aluminum with an M1913 Picatinny rail machined into its upper surface for optics mounting. The front of the cover is fitted to the receiver with a hinge, allowing it to swing open, but stay attached to allow optics to return to zero. The rear of the receiver has a section of Picatinny rail for attaching stocks or arm braces.
The safety is a crossbolt design located above the pistol grip. Standard AK pistol grips can be used and the SAK-21 comes with a Meriden Defense AK grip. The trigger is two-stage and flat-faced. An AK-type paddle magazine release is in front of the trigger guard. A bolt hold-open device is incorporated into the design. It is engaged by a special last-round-hold-open (LRHO) magazine follower and released by bilateral buttons. The left-side release can also be used to manually lock open the bolt. Standard AK magazines can be used, but they will not activate the bolt-hold-open. The SAK-21 comes with an XTech Tactical magazine with a LRHO follower. Magazines are available in 30- or 10-round capacities.
The handguard is made of extruded aluminum and mounts to a receiver extension to allow the barrel to free-float. It has a Picatinny rail on both its top and bottom surfaces, along with numerous M-Lok attachment points. The barrel has its muzzle threaded 5/8×24 TPI and is equipped with a unique muzzle brake.
Stenzel had the SAK-21 on hand at the 2026 SHOT Show Industry Day at the Range. The 12.5-inch version I had the opportunity to use made easy hits on a steel plate at 100 yards, shooting off-hand with a red-dot sight.
The SAK-21 is currently offered in the Operator pistol format. The pistol has a 12.5-inch barrel and a JMAC Customs folding arm bar that has an A3 Industries arm stabilizing brace attached. It has an overall length of 31.5 inches or 23.25 inches with the brace folded and weighs 8.25 pounds. The SAK-21 Operator pistol has an MSRP of $4,000.
