Bear Forest Knives is an up-and-coming knife outfit in Palm Desert, Calif., owned by knifemaker Garrett Tremblay. A seasoned metalworker, Garrett was well-positioned when he went into the knifemaking business — and makes knives he does! I had the opportunity to test one of his knives recently, the Bear Forest Custom Recurve, and was impressed. Dainty it ain’t. Tremblay is one of those knifemakers who builds his knives extra tough in case you need it to go the extra mile — an admirable trait. The Custom Recurve is a tank in the hand.

Bear Forest’s Custom Recurve is a mid-sized fixed-blade, 7.75″ in length. The 52100 high carbon chromium alloy steel recurved blade is 3.25″ in length and a very beefy 3/16″ thick. The ample handle is 4.5″ and the eye-popping Custom version here is a sandwich of black, orange and natural cross-cut Canvas Micarta. Other blade lengths of Tremblay’s Recurve are available and a bevy of plain handles are offered on non-custom versions. The Custom Recurve weighs in at 5.0 oz. Bear Forest delivers the knife in a black Kydex sheath with a black coated 2.25″ spring steel belt clip for carry
