An inmate who escaped from a prison work detail in Towns County, Ga., was returned to custody after being detained by an armed property owner.
Police say the prisoner was working at a local dump when he escaped into some nearby woods. Three days later, a 911 caller said they had spotted someone wearing an orange jail uniform. Several hours after the call, in the same area, the property owner was alerted to movement outside of his house by his dog, which had begun barking.
The property owner grabbed his gun and went outside, where he met the prisoner in the orange jumpsuit. The homeowner ordered the escaped convict to the ground and held him at gunpoint while his wife called 911. Local deputies arrived on scene and took the man back into custody. The prisoner had initially been jailed for two counts of burglary, probation violations and drug charges. He now faces new charges related to the escape. (WSB-TV Atlanta; Fodder Creek, Ga.; 7/20/24)
