Welcome to another American Rifleman Gun Of The Week, and this time we’re on the range with one of Walther’s Performance Duty Pistols. Walther’s PDP series offers up some noteworthy attributes that can’t be ignored. From full-size, steel-frame competition models, to fully decked out polymer-frame, compact options like the one you see here on the range, there’s a lot to like about this gun design. So, let’s hit some of its features.
Walther’s PDP Pro SD 4.6” Compact is a recoil-operated, striker-fired, semi-automatic pistol that measures 8.1” long and weighs 26.4 ozs with an empty magazine. Given its “Pro” moniker, it’s expected that this model will include a few factory upgrades. It comes with a removable, extended and flared magazine well for easy reloading. You also receive three magazines, all of which include a baseplate that allows for 18 rounds of 9 mm onboard. It is important to note these magazines are strictly designed for the Compact frame and will not work in full-size models. In addition, “Pro” models come with Walther’s Dynamic Performance Trigger. It offers tactical ergonomics with incredibly smooth and crisp performance and, to note, this trigger alone is a $180 upgrade if you purchase and add it to a standard PDP model.
Like all other PDPs, this version features Walther’s ergonomic polymer frame with removable backstraps, which means you can dial it in for a custom fit. You’ll get enhanced texturing throughout with subtle treatments that help to anchor the gun in hand and truly improve the shooter’s experience. And the PDP Pro SD Compact comes with easy-to-reach controls, all of which are enlarged and nicely textured.
The PDP Pro SD comes with an optic-ready slide and fully adjustable sights. Walther employs a Tenifer finish to the metal parts for durability, which is especially helpful when carried close to the body. Along the sides you get deep serrations fore and aft, which really help control the gun when needed. Given this is the “SD” version, which is a German acronym for shalldampfer, meaning silencer or dampener, it is threaded 1/2×28 TPI for accessories. In addition, Walther ships its PDP Pro SD with a hard case, custom-cut foam liner and accessories, including an additional recoil-spring assembly because of increased pressures resulting from suppressor use. You’ll also receive three frame backstraps to choose from.
This latest version of Walther’s PDP shines on the range. Its size strikes a handy balance for concealed carry use. We appreciate the included optic cut, and found Walther has updated its cutout to include machined-in recoil lugs. This was done in 2022, so if you have an early PDP you may require a different optic plate than what is being made today. All told, Walther’s PDP Pro SD Compact, in this two-tone FDE configuration, gives the market performance-driven features in a compact package that can be carried all day and shot all weekend.
