Columbia, S.C.-based Palmetto State Armory (PSA) got its start nearly two decades ago as a retailer of firearm accessories and ammunition. The company quickly moved into producing its own firearms, starting with well-established designs like the AR-15 and AK-47, becoming one of the top 10 firearm manufacturers in the country. Over the past few years, PSA has branched out to design its own unique firearms. One of these firearms, the piston-operated Jakl rifle, has been adapted into a bullpup configuration, which PSA calls the Olcan.

The PSA Olcan takes the company’s Jakl long-stroke gas-piston upper and pairs it with a bullpup chassis.

The PSA Jakl is a conventional rifle that pairs a long-stroke gas-piston operating system upper with a standard AR-15 lower. Since the Jakl’s recoil spring mechanism is contained within the upper receiver, the lower does not require the receiver extension and buffer spring of a standard AR. That last feature is critical, as it allows the conventional Jakl to be adapted into the bullpup Olcan.

Think of an Olcan as an aluminum bullpup chassis for a Jakl upper. The only modifications necessary to a Jakl upper is to install a polymer cheekpiece on the upper Picatinny rail. The Olcan chassis will work with all Jakl 5.56 NATO to .300 Blackout uppers with 10.5-inch or longer barrels (note: using a barrel less than 16 inches in overall length is subject to the provisions of the NFA).

Like all bullpups, the Olcan renders a short for barrel length overall package.

PSA is offering the Olcan as both complete rifles or complete lowers. The complete rifles have 14.5-inch barrels with a pinned and welded SilencerCo ASR or JMAC Customs RRD-2C (Dead Air Keymo pattern) muzzle device/suppressor mount to achieve a non-NFA 16-inch overall length, and are available with either a black or flat dark-earth (FDE) hard coat anodized finish in either 5.56 NATO or .300 Blackout. With the 14.5-inch barrel and pinned and welded muzzle device, overall length is just over 26 inches. Olcan complete lowers are also available in black or FDE finishes.

The Olcan is also available as a complete lower for those who already have a Jakl upper.

Complete Olcan rifles have an MSRP of $1,400, with Olcan lowers priced at $500. For more information, see the company’s website.

Complete Jakl rifles are available in black or flat dark-earth finishes. They have 14.5-inch barrels with pinned and welded muzzle devices, either a JMAC Customs RRD-2C (pictured) or SilencerCo ASR.
