The U.S. Air Force imposes restrictions on the use of the SIG Sauer M18 handgun after a security forces airman died when their firearm discharged unexpectedly at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. This incident has triggered multiple investigations, including one by the Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations, as officials seek to understand the circumstances surrounding the fatal discharge.

The M18, popular among both military and civilian users, is currently under scrutiny for allegations of unintended discharges; a recent investigation identified over 100 reported incidents of this nature. In response to the ongoing safety concerns, Air Force Global Strike Command has paused the use of the M18 until inspections are completed, while security personnel will temporarily switch to the M4 rifle to ensure safety measures are thoroughly addressed.
