The family of Jabari Peoples, an 18-year-old Black teenager shot and killed by police in Homewood, Alabama, is demanding access to body-camera footage of the incident to restore trust with the community. During a recent press conference, civil rights attorney Ben Crump emphasized that transparency and accountability are essential as the state refuses to release the video amid an ongoing investigation, which has raised concerns among activists about the police’s version of events.

Peoples was shot on June 23 as he reportedly reached for a gun during a struggle with an officer while being arrested for marijuana possession. Eyewitness accounts contradict the police’s claims, asserting that he did not possess a weapon at the time. As protests continue in the suburb, the family’s attorney insists that sharing the footage could quiet concerns; “Just release the video,” Crump stated. Peoples’ family held a vigil where hundreds gathered, further highlighting the community’s grief and demand for justice.
