Thunder Bay police report a staggering 92% increase in firearms seized or surrendered in 2024, with investigators taking into custody 267 guns compared to 139 in the previous year. This rise highlights ongoing concerns as gun-related crime rates continue to climb, with statistics revealing 40 incidents reported in 2022—a 75% increase compared to the annual average between 2012 and 2021.

Detective Inspector Jeremy Pearson emphasizes the serious risks faced by officers during drug-related investigations, noting that seized firearms often accompany significant quantities of illicit drugs. “The fact that guns are present on the streets and being seized during active public enforcement raises alarms for community safety,” Pearson states.
