Alaska Man Sentenced for Gun Trafficking to Sacramento

Alaska Man Sentenced for Gun Trafficking to Sacramento

An Alaska man, Cornelius Smith, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for trafficking firearms to Sacramento, where they have been linked to violent crimes. Smith, 34, legally purchased 28 guns in Alaska between February 2021 and April 2022, falsely claiming he was not buying them for anyone else and subsequently transporting them to California.

Approximately half of the guns have been recovered in Sacramento, with the Department of Justice reporting connections to attempted homicides and gang-related shootings. U.S. Attorney Michael J. Heyman emphasized the severity of straw purchases that contribute to gun violence, stating that Smith’s actions directly endangered public safety. He now faces three years of supervised release following his prison term, alongside the requirement to complete 120 hours of community service.
