During the funeral of Pope Francis, held on April 28, 2025, the Vatican employed advanced anti-drone weapons to ensure security as over 250,000 attendees gathered to pay their respects. These Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS), resembling futuristic weapons from the video game “Halo,” were deployed for the first time at a papal event and were part of extensive security measures enforced in response to increasing aerial threats globally.

The proceedings took place under the protection of a no-fly zone monitored by NATO surveillance jets, while armed Swiss Guards and Italian Special Forces patrolled the streets, equipped with the striking anti-drone guns. Although these weapons were ready to neutralize potential risks, neither the Swiss Guard nor the Italian military had to activate them during the event, highlighting the effectiveness of the comprehensive security strategy.
