This article, “Ultimate Pistol Accuracy: 1.5″ Groups At 1/4 Mile,” originally appeared in the June 1995 issue of American Rifleman. To subscribe to the monthly magazine, visit NRA’s membership page. The odyssey that brings Don Bower’s story to these pages from Colorado began with his letter to NRA back in 1993. Because it was critical of the magazine, it landed on my desk at the American Rifleman. “Since 1981,” Bower began his letter, “I have been successfully rechambering existing T/C Contender 14″ barrels to unprecedented achievements. I shoot consistent 1.5” center to center 3-shot groups all day long at 500…

It’s rather incredible to realize how rapidly the American firearm industry brings to market significant new products. So, in our most recent issue, we recap coverage of some of the most noteworthy from past months, and we present a few others that have only recently become available. First up is the subject of our May 2025 cover story titled “Heckler & Koch CC9: An H&K For The USA” by field editor and noted firearm trainer Justin Dyal. He put the all-new micro-compact Concealed Carry 9 pistol through its paces on the range and came away more than a little impressed.…
There’s something breathtaking about a high-powered hunting dog doing its job. Speed, athleticism, drive—it’s all personified in that moment, and it’s a beautiful thing. It takes a dog with a lot of courage, endurance, and enthusiasm to do the job of hunting well, but those qualities can also be counterproductive.I suspect most of us have hunted behind a dog that is all gas and no brakes (of course, it was a friend’s dog, not one that you own!). Often, those dogs resist the partnership of the hunt. They hate to come in close enough to make eye contact, get leashed,…
A police officer in Monroe, North Carolina, is in stable condition after being shot multiple times by a suspect armed with a rifle in the early hours of Saturday morning. The incident began with a chase that ended when officers deployed stop sticks, prompting the suspect to open fire, hitting the officer. The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Joshua Hayden Sikes, fled into nearby woods, leading to an extensive manhunt with drones and a helicopter. When Sikes fired upon officers during the confrontation, they returned fire, fatally wounding him. Monroe Police Chief Rhett Bolen noted that the suspect intended to kill,…
The .270 Winchester isn’t a military cartridge, and nobody ever claimed it was a target cartridge; it is a straightforward hunting cartridge. During the past 50 years, I’ve hunted quite a bit carrying a .270 Win. rifle, and, to tell the truth, no cartridges have come along that significantly better it for hunting. Since it’s such a popular hunting cartridge, every brand and style of bullet is available for handloading the .270 Win. If you want to handload single-metal copper-alloy bullets, Hornady sells its CX, Barnes its Tipped Triple Shock and Hammer Bullets its Hunter. If shooting past the curvature…
The US dollar banking system is in the midst of a bank run by the measures that I will illustrate here. Since the 1879 gold standard was established in America, the US dollar could be directly redeemed for gold within the banking system. This continued even after the Federal Reserve was created and until it was ended for citizens in 1933. In such a system, the measure of actual gold held by the banking system ( the true monetary base) versus the gold certificates (paper dollars but measured as the monetary base) with which gold could be redeemed is a…
The Gnome sipped on some nocino while glaring at an old map splayed across his kitchen table. The pungent, dark walnut liqueur had a spicy heat that wormed its way down his esophagus and into his belly. He’d won the map in a game of throwing bones off a man who promised it led to a patch of morels as big as The Gnome himself. He was fairly certain the map was a mockery—why else would someone give away this kind of information in a game of luck? And yet, the Gnome was captivated by the markings on the old parchment.…
Camarillo Special Enforcement Unit detectives have arrested a 28-year-old man in Oxnard after discovering he possessed an unserialized AR-15, known as a “ghost gun.” The arrest occurred following a search warrant executed at his residence on Hemlock Street, where detectives also uncovered additional firearms classified as assault weapons, as well as magazines and ammunition. The investigation, which led to the man’s arrest on charges including unlawful firearm transfer and possession of an assault weapon, reflects ongoing efforts by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office to address illegal firearm possession in the area. This case raises concerns about the proliferation of untraceable…
