Editor’s Introductory Note: This guest article was written by our friend and fellow blogger, Patrice Lewis. Her entertaining and informative Rural Revolution blog has been published several times a week since 2009. We highly recommend bookmarking it. – JWR — Last year, we bred Maggie, our Jersey heifer, to a neighbor’s young Angus bull. It was a convenient arrangement, and little Stormy was the product of that breeding. But our neighbors no longer have that little bull, so we were trying to figure out how to get Maggie bred this year. After some discussion, we decided to use…
On September 28, 1779, Samuel Huntington was elected President of the Continental Congress, succeeding John Jay. Huntington was a self-educated man who became an attorney and statesman. The following is a fair use excerpt from the Descendants of Signers of the Declaration of Independence DSDI website: “Samuel Huntington was born in the town of Scotland, Windham County, Connecticut on July 5, 1731, the 4th of ten children, and second son of Nathaniel Huntington and Mehetable Thurston [Huntington]. Nathaniel was a farmer and clothier at Scotland, and built a home there in 1732 that still stands to this day. Samuel’s great-grandfather…
With a name that, on the eve of America’s semiquincentennial, celebrates the spirit of its founding heroes, Champion Safe Co.’s Patriot series American Rebel line represents a near-ideal merging of capacity (42 guns), size (34″ wide by 60″ high by 24.5″ deep), weight (625 lbs.) and fire protection (1,200º F for 75 minutes). The safe’s walls are constructed using American-made 12-ga. steel, which, along with inner 14-ga. plate steel, 10 active 1.25″-diameter bolts and a 4″-thick single-step door, presents a formidable barrier against theft and fire for its owner’s prized possessions. A variety of options and upgrades are available. Pricing…
Just like with its centerfire rifles, Savage Arms offers a wide selection of rimfire long guns that cover a range of price points and are tailored to specific uses. The semi-automatic A22 and bolt-action B Series rifles anchor the company’s rimfire selection. Last year, the company introduced the Timber series of rimfire precision rifles with these models, which offered enhanced features for a reasonable price. New for 2025 are the A22 and B Series Timber Tactical rifles. The new Savage Timber Tactical rimfire rifles are a precision tactical addition to the Timber series introduced last year. Though they use different…
To be prepared for a crisis, every Prepper must establish goals and make both long-term and short-term plans. In this column, the SurvivalBlog editors review their week’s prep activities and planned prep activities for the coming week. These range from healthcare and gear purchases to gardening, ranch improvements, bug-out bag fine-tuning, and food storage. This is something akin to our Retreat Owner Profiles, but written incrementally and in detail, throughout the year. We always welcome you to share your own successes and wisdom in your e-mailed letters. We post many of those — or excerpts thereof — in the Odds…
Last weekend, I was performing my periodic battery survey, assessment and replacement ritual. I have a list of (I had thought) every battery device, and its location, along with a hidey-hole for the batteries to replace those that require them. This list, in the summer 2025 edition, runs 3 pages of 14 point type. On my yearly planner, it is slated for January. (Yes, I am aware that this is September. Let us consider the gulf between plans, and actions, shall we?) As it developed, as I was working my way through each page, I would pass one shelf in…
On September 27, 1908, Henry Ford‘s first production Ford Model T automobile left the Piquette Plant in Detroit, Michigan. Mass production soon followed. — And on September 27,1936, the Netherlands left the Gold Standard and devalued the Dutch Guilder. — Today, we present a short guest piece by long-time SurvivalBlog reader and fellow blogger Reltney McFee. It first appeared in his entertaining but sporadically-posted blog: Musings of A Stretcher Ape. — Just a few days left! We are in need of entries for Round 120 of the SurvivalBlog non-fiction writing contest. More than $960,000 worth of prizes have been awarded…
Armed Citizen® Today What police called an “ongoing dispute” escalated in a Winston-Salem, N.C., neighborhood on Saturday, August 9, when one of the men involved aggressively confronted another homeowner, resulting in what the local district attorney deemed a case of self-defense. Officers say the ongoing argument between the two men erupted into violence when one of the local residents, a 54-year-old man, who was armed with a gun, approached the other man’s home in a “threatening manner.” The other homeowner, fearful for his life, had armed himself and opened fire, hitting the 54-year-old suspect. When police were called to the…
Rossi USA is the U.S.-based extension of Braztech International, a Brazilian firm that’s been in the firearm business for decades, and it offers up myriad firearms, most of which have classic appeal such as lever-actions and wheelguns. But much has changed with Rossi’s lineup in recent times, with the company adding in modern single-shots with features that appeal to those wanting to run optics and suppressors. And the addons don’t end there. Watch our video above to learn more. The Lightweight Carbine (LWC) from Rossi is available in a modest suite of chamberings at this time, from 5.56 NATO to…
A few weeks ago, I published an article highlighting the 10 best modern hunting cartridges. My intention wasn’t to hate on older cartridges, just to provide a list of some of the best new offerings of the last 25 years.Still, some commenters felt compelled to defend their favorite cartridges (an honorable impulse), and several argued that these newfangled PRC’s and Creedmoor’s and ARC’s are all hat and no cattle. They don’t actually outperform tried-and-true designs—they’re just meant to fleece the hunting public for more money and give gun writers something to spill ink on.I don’t agree with this entirely, but…
