Baton Rouge Gunman Pleads Guilty in Fatal Robbery Case

Dereck Torrise Hayes, 30, pleads guilty in a Baton Rouge court to conspiracy to commit armed robbery, resulting in a 15-year prison sentence. This plea allows Hayes to avoid a life sentence for the second-degree murder of Brian Dawson, who was shot and killed during the robbery on November 20, 2020.

The tragic incident unfolded near the Mississippi River bluffs, where witnesses reported hearing gunshots and demands for money. Hayes, along with his alleged accomplice Johnny Brown, was captured shortly after the crime. Brown, who was just 15 at the time of the robbery, faces ongoing legal proceedings, highlighting the complexities surrounding youth involvement in serious crimes.
