Attorney General Pam Bondi’s controversial plan to merge the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is drawing criticism from across the political spectrum. Advocates from both sides of the gun control debate express alarm over potential budget cuts that could accompany the merger, raising questions about the government’s ability to enforce existing laws effectively.

The proposed consolidation aims to enhance efficiency, with Bondi asserting that “everyone knows guns and drugs go together.” However, groups such as the Second Amendment Foundation warn that this could create “a super-entity of gun control enforcers,” ultimately undermining Second Amendment rights. This unprecedented bipartisan concern underscores the complexities associated with reshaping agencies fundamental to public safety and the enforcement of laws related to firearms and drugs.
