Calgary-based Sterling Arms International is forced to halt operations and lay off staff after the RCMP classified its R9 Mk1 semi-automatic rifle as a prohibited firearm. This decision, which has rendered millions in inventory unsellable, leaves the company struggling to survive in an increasingly restrictive regulatory environment.

Company president J.R. Cox cites the R9 Mk1’s design for sporting competitions as a key aspect of its development, and he expresses frustration over the lack of compensation for previously banned firearms. With pressure mounting, Cox is now exploring relocation options for his production facilities as he grapples with potential bankruptcy.
