Cities like Memphis and Detroit top the list for gun theft rates, emphasizing a concerning trend of stolen guns fueling local crime rates.
The report highlights the pressing need for improved firearm security, as firearms stolen from vehicles often circulate within the criminal underworld. With only 16 states mandating the reporting of lost or stolen firearms, experts argue for stronger legislation and public education on safe storage practices. “Where you store your gun really matters,” said Susan Parker, a report author, pointing to vehicle thefts as a significant yet often overlooked source of illegally circulating weapons.
