Louisville city leaders, including Metro Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins, call for community cooperation to address the rising youth gun violence following a recent shooting that left a woman dead at a bus stop in the Russell neighborhood. During an August 14 news conference, Hawkins emphasized the necessity of community involvement, stating, “The power is in our hands,” as she urged citizens to take accountability and work together to reclaim their neighborhoods.

In the wake of the shooting, which reportedly occurred as the victim was walking with a child, Louisville Metro Police Chief Paul Humphrey highlighted the community’s role in identifying the shooter. Local leaders, including representatives from the NAACP and Urban League, argue that legislative support is vital in addressing the root causes of gun violence, suggesting measures like the installation of cameras at bus stops to enhance safety and prevent future tragedies.
