Colorado Mandates Permit for Semiautomatic Rifle Purchases

Colorado has enacted a new law requiring residents to obtain a discretionary permit and complete 12 hours of firearms training to purchase semiautomatic rifles. Effective August 2026, the law mandates that applicants receive approval from local sheriffs, who can deny applications based on perceived risks, raising concerns about the consistency of these regulations with Second Amendment rights.

State Sen. Tom Sullivan, who sponsored the bill, links it to efforts to curb gun violence following personal tragedy, asserting that high-capacity magazines contribute significantly to mass shootings. However, critics, including Republican members of Colorado’s congressional delegation, argue the law infringes on the rights of law-abiding citizens and imposes burdensome requirements that could criminalize otherwise lawful behavior.
