Colorado’s New Conceal Carry Certification Requirements

As of July 1st, Colorado’s updated laws mandate that residents seeking or renewing a permit to conceal and carry a handgun must now complete a minimum of eight hours of in-person training from a verified instructor. This new requirement, which amends previous regulations that allowed applicants to submit training completed within the last ten years, emphasizes immediate and thorough education to enhance firearm safety.

The training program, as specified by the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, covers critical topics such as safe storage, awareness of firearm safety around children, and applicable use-of-force laws. Notably, to obtain the conceal and carry certification, students are also required to demonstrate shooting proficiency by firing at least 50 rounds with an accuracy of 70 percent or higher. These changes reveal a shift in Colorado’s approach to gun ownership and public safety.
