The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals considers an appeal from Bradley Wendt, a former police chief in Adair, Iowa, who seeks to overturn his conviction for illegal possession of machine guns and making false statements to federal agents. Wendt argues that his case raises significant questions about the Second Amendment, drawing interest from judges who scrutinize the validity of the government’s prosecution against a law enforcement officer.

Convicted in 2022, Wendt spent over $150,000 on machine guns he claimed were for his police department, but the government alleges he misled officials about his intent. The court’s upcoming ruling could have important implications for how gun laws intersect with law enforcement authority, especially since Wendt’s legal team asserts he may be the first officer convicted federally in such a case.
