Crime continues to decline in Albany, with property crime decreasing by approximately 26% compared to last year, according to Police Chief Brendan Cox. The Albany Police Department’s strategy emphasizes enforcement, deterrence, and community education, particularly for those involved in larceny and gun violence, by connecting them with necessary services instead of solely pursuing prosecution.

Chief Cox noted that this approach helps target underlying issues like substance use and poverty, contributing to a significant reduction in gun-related incidents as well. Despite these gains, Mayor Kathy Sheehan highlighted the ongoing need for more officers to enhance neighborhood engagement and maintain safety in the community.
