Deer hunting will return to Mount Penn and Antietam Lake Park this fall as officials implement a controlled bow hunting program to address the area’s overabundant deer population. Set to begin on September 20 and run through January 24, this initiative allows specially licensed hunters to operate within these parks while aiming to balance the local ecosystem and reduce related issues such as land damage and disease threats.
This program, established in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services, requires participating hunters to pass proficiency tests and adhere to Pennsylvania Game Commission regulations. Each hunter will have the opportunity to keep the meat they harvest, making this not only a wildlife management effort but also a source of food for the hunters involved. For those interested in future participation, Wildlife Services is currently accepting applications for a waiting list.
