Longtime firearm industry author Dick Metcalf passed away in October 2023, and now, select examples from his extensive collection of firearms, curated by Sportsman’s Legacy, are up for auction through GunBroker.com. For more than 40 years, Metcalf was a contributing editor to Guns & Ammo, Shooting Times, Petersen’s Hunting and Handguns. He was also a familiar face on the Sportsman Channel, as well as the digital channels associated with the Outdoor Sportsman Group brands. Throughout his career, Metcalf amassed a collection of unique firearms, including custom guns and one-off prototypes, as well as a number of consecutively serial-numbered firearms.

Highlights of the collection include a number of rare Smith & Wesson revolvers, notably a prototype Model 63 Kit Gun chambered for .22 Long Rifle, one of only 12 such guns, as well as a number of prototype and early-production Model 460 VXR revolvers. Several early-production Ruger firearms are also included in the auction lot, each with its own VIP serial number attributed to Metcalf. Other notable firearms include Metcalf’s custom Brown Heinie M1911, built by master gunsmiths Ed Brown and Richard Heinie, and a prototype Alaskan Guide prototype revolver chambered for the .445 SuperMag.

In all, more than 80 firearms are available in the auction, which ends on March 23. For more details on the guns up for sale, visit GunBroker.com.
